We really need to stop for a minute and give ourselves a pat in the back for how quickly we all adapted our work habits. 2020 was the loss of catching up on the latest on The Bachelor around the water cooler, and the year we ditched handshakes but with that came an increase the amount of time we spend on our bum!
I don’t know if you’ve ever considered it but sitting is a reasonably new idea! Think about it, how much time did hunter gatherers have to sit? Not a lot I’m sure, and little to none if they wanted to eat… But 2020 was the year that we all spent a little too much time in front of the computer monitor. The dangers of this new way of (not) moving are fairly significant. It can lead to chronic health problems like heart disease, various cancers and even can be harmful for our mental health.
However, there's lots you can do to combat this inactivity…
The good news is these risks factors are completely reversible. A November 2020 study published by the British Journal of Sports Medicine found the perils of prolonged sitting can be countered if the individual exceeds weekly recommended activity levels. Scientists used over 44 000 people from four different countries, which means their findings are as good as gospel! “High daily tally of sedentary time (10 hours or more) is linked to a significantly heightened risk of death, particularly among people who are physically inactive ~ however 30 to 40 minutes every day of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity substantially weakened the risk. In fact, it brings it down to levels associated with very low sedentary time.
Butt (see what I did there?!) it gets even better, if you find yourself having to sit in front of the computer recently it appears all physical activity counts. “This could be anything from climbing the stairs instead of taking the lift, a brisk walk around the block, a spot of gardening, some chores (yeah I know not exciting!), right through to going for a run. A bike ride or a group exercise class at Rise!
So there you have it. Get moving and get off your butt!
